Gerri's Closet Review by Marlia

On Friday April 3, 2015, I was blessed with an amazing opportunity. I had the privilege of meeting and shopping with Gerri, the owner of Gerri’s Closet in Green, Ohio. Upon entering the beautiful consignment boutique, I was greeted with a pleasant smile, welcoming arms, a cup of coffee, and pastries. This was the perfect start to a very pleasant shopping experience.

The shop was beautiful. Its interior design had a vintage/HGTV feel with the different colors, patterns, and fabrics to match. I was expecting the typical “thrift store” look, but Gerri and her associates did their best to model a high end boutique. Everything was organized and had a place. There were signs and pictures that explained what and where the items were located. This day I was in search of a dress and possibly a pair of shoes.

There was a young women’s section that had caught my eye. It was full of trendy items. As I made my way over to those racks I was approached by Stephanie, a sales associate that has been a fan and supporter of Gerri’s Closet for years. She guided me right through the process of finding the perfect dress. We engaged in light but lovely conversations. Stephanie had no idea that I was there to analyze and really get to the internal make up of the place. Just like Gerri, she was kind, welcoming, and warm. She stated that many of their customers come for a consistent shopping experience. Gerri is like everyone’s sister. “Gerri has a way of making people feel like they belong. She is there as a therapist and style expert. Some people just come to talk, knowing that Gerri would be there with an open heart and ears.” I immediately felt like I was at home.

My probing didn’t just stop there. I was determined to get to the heart of what made this consignment shop and what kept it going. I found my answers in Gerri herself. The woman was beautiful. She had this bright smile, big personality, and stylish sense of fashion. It wasn’t just her looks that I loved but her ways and mannerisms were soaked in compassion. I could tell that she was genuinely concerned about helping people as they transitioned through life.

Gerri’s Heart

To be honest Gerri loves being apart of people’s lives.  She desires to assist them in any way that she can. She explained that some women go through life altering situations that force them to revamp their wardrobes and many of them don’t know where to begin. Gerri then discovers their need and meets them where they are.  She states that “it’s not about the clothes it’s about the people”. She desires to offer great value, excellent customer service, and sound advise when needed. Gerri believes that all women should take pride in what they look like and desires to assist them in that process. Whether you’re changing careers or have lost or gained weight, Gerri would like to bridge the gap and help you with your transition.

Consignment vs. Thrift
Many people don’t know the difference between consignment shopping and thrifting. The consignment process goes through many phases. First Gerri’s hired consignment shoppers go out and find quality clothing with little to no tearing. They pride themselves on bringing in materials that match the design and structure of the original fabrics that are sold in the stores. Gerri’s Closet holds brands such as consignment shoppers split the cost and do their best to sell the items at a reasonable price. Know that many of the local thrift stores are not for profit businesses and that is why they are able to sell their clothing at such low prices. Gerri would like for all of customers to know that the prices are based on the current quality, condition, and the original price of the item. People will walk away paying minimal prices as compared to store pricing. Gerri and her team of experts do their research and know their brands.

Community Involvement
Gerri and her partners give away unsold items at the end of every month to Haven’s Arrest located in Akron, Ohio. Through this process, Gerri’s Closet is able to help clothe the homeless women and children that take residence in the shelter. Gerri also offers reasonable prices on clothing which saves money for the community shoppers.

A Little History
While in college, Gerri had the desire to impact lives through counseling and social services. At the same time she fell in love with fashion and retail. Gerri made the decision to combine her love for fashion and counseling by opening up her own store and ministering to all that entered the front doors.

Gerri has changed my outlook on consignment shopping. I was able to find quality clothing at great prices while having an amazing conversation with such a beautiful Owner. I would recommend this store to anyone. I also plan on going back again and bringing my friends and family so that they can share in this awesome experience that only Gerri’s Closet can provide.
